Birmingham was one of the most racist cities in the South. During peaceful marches, there were violent reactions. Protestors are attacked by police dogs, sprayed with high power fire hoses, beaten and arrested. In one day, nearly 1,000 children as young as six were arrested. Martin Luther King, Jr. was arrested and wrote his famous “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”.
